I just got my computer back from my computer guy on Tuesday. It was running really slowly, and I knew there were problems. He said he got rid of a ton of spyware and other nonsense. It was running so fast for a few days, it was like new. Well, now it is running slow again. I keep timing out at the poker table, and it takes forever to go anywhere. Also, my mouse keeps getting stuck. I am definitely infected with something. I have Norton and am running a full scan right now. It's been runnning for a while and hasn't picked anything up. Is there some better software, hopefully free, with which to scan/remove stuff so I don't have to spend another $65 at the computer guy. Also, I really don't surf the web that much, but I noticed this happened after I downloaded an upgrade from stars. I really don't know if it's related because I wasn't really paying attention.

I suggest "ad-aware" for spyware management. Since you have Norton running already for viruses, the next major category of "gunk" clogging up computer arteries is spyware. They have a free version and it seems to do a pretty good job. http://www.lavasoft.de/ look for the download for the free personal "SE" edition button. I run it once a week, seems to work ok for me.

OK, I'm blind or tired or something, but I can't find the button to download the free SE edition. Can you look on the page and tell me where it is located? Sounds like it may already be too late, happened to me 3 weeks ago & I was running all the usual stuff. I reformatted in the end after weeks of trying to clear it up. Exactly the same symptons you describe chimp. On Dec 3 2006 9:46 AM, pokerchimp wrote: > OK, I'm blind or tired or something, but I can't find the button to download > the free SE edition. Front page, upper right hand corner, also 4th over on the download and buy page. IF IT REALLY ISN'T SHOWING UP! It may already be too late. It is sometimes symptomatic of a machine that has been taken over, that things like downloading anti-spy software is blocked. In which case you need to either take it to your computer guy, with a better deal that will keep you locked down, or you may consider moving to mac, linux, or vista when it comes out (each of these harder to take over, and vista may be your best bet, because it will run most of the stuff you want, but the security model is different, and much less prone to the kind of stuff you are running into). I moved to the Mac, even though as a computer professional of many many years, I just did not want to put in the effort to become a security professional, so I went where the security issues were much much less. This means that I play on Full-tilt, and that if I wanted to, I could play elsewhere but only in Parallels, and I never browse anywhere except on the Mac Side. But, really, nope. Not worth it. But I guess I am missing those .02/.04 NL games where the rules are wrong...

Personally I'd do what the other poster said and format/reload. If you aren't able to do that (or even if you do, to start fresh), I'd ditch the Norton since there are better programs for free. For antivirus, I'd either use AVG (www.grisoft.com) or Avast (www.avast.com). Both have free versions for home use. For spyware, I'd use Microsoft's Windows Defender (www.microsoft.com and there should be a link somewhere on the main page or in popular downloads). I would also visit www.spywareinfo.com and run their online scanner from time to time. If you don't have a router/firewall, go buy one. Linksys and Netgear are both fine brands to get, and you shouldn't have to spend more than $50 or so. Regarding AVG anti-virus, you probably should manually update to the 7.5 version. I had 7.1 and if I "check for updates", it would tell me I had the latest version or that there were no updates available. The 7.5 free version is on the link supplied in an earlier post. I ditched AVG a while ago. They decided that as long as a computer was on a domain, it wasn't a "home computer", and all automatic updates stopped. Avast replaced it for me. Not if they're just firewalls. All you'd get is an extra couple of microseconds lag on your internet connecitons. It's just an extra layer in the TCP/IP stack. If they're doing extra stuff as well (like ZoneAlarm has a little bit of antivirus/antispyware capability), they might.

My advice to anyone who's PC is compromised to any significant extent is to format the disk and reinstall the operating system (after backing up your data of course). Having gained access to your system, there are dozens of things a hacker can do to give themselves access that none of the regular anti-spyware/anti-virus packages will detect. If you have not yet clued yourself up to be able to reinstall your system quickly and easily, it's time you learnt. Had you not been advised that your PC was riddled with "a ton of spyware and other nonsense" I would suggest you first check your ping speeds to the game servers you play on. Real-time onlline games like poker require very good network latency and disconnects/timeouts are a classic symptom of poor latency. ____________________________________________________________________ RecGroups : the community-oriented newsreader : www.recgroups.com

I usually lose my cable signal at the top of the hour several times a day. It's their problem and it takes a couple of minutes of just waiting and doing nothing until the modem lights return back to normal so I can pick up where I left off. Then there are the monthly untimed glitches where all of the power in the city goes out for 10 seconds to 5 minutes at a time; can't play a hand without getting spooked by that one.

Mornin' Chimp. All of these are downloadable (lol) whylst still in your PJ's darling: WebRoot Spyware (worth the $30 per year; awesome customer service; great program) From ^^^^^^^ you can "upgrade" ($) with WebRoot Window Washer (set it to HIGH BLEACH) Also, make sure you keep your system defragged (control panel; system tools) at least once a week; keep all your temporary internet folders EMPTY; go take off as many programs (add/remove programs; control panel) as you can, which haven't been used in months or say "rarely". However, be very careful of the warnings which may come up on your screen indicating you may have a problem in OTHER programs if you continue your deletion selection. Have a great day and week. Merry Christmas. mcp/lv,NV On Dec 3 2006 5:49 AM, pokerchimp wrote: > I just got my computer back from my computer guy on Tuesday. It was running > really slowly, and I knew there were problems. Also get Lavasoft's Ad-Aware (dig through the website for the free version) and SpyBot Search&Destroy. Do your initial clean-up scans from Safe Mode (f8 during boot to get the option). This might not be enough, so you might need a techy again: make him do it free as he left you with a setup that got whacked again. Proper passwords on all accounts on the machine, including the Administrator one that's only visible in Safe Mode: that's at least 8 chars, mixed upper&lower case, digits, and specials. At least the Windows firewall, but preferably a real one, either Zonealarm OR get a router to put between you and the internet.

No, $65 is his minimum charge. He is the best in town though, has more work than he can handle. Actually, he'll probably do it for me for free. But I think I cleared up the problem. I followed Chan's advice and uninstalled everything I don't use and then defragged. Then I did all the things Morphy told me to do, so I scanned and destryed and deleted. It seems ok now, nut I will play some poker to test it. Thanks for all your suggestions.
