I can see at least two mistakes in this, but perhaps I'm wrong
and there are more or less. I think I missed a raise and a bet.

It's an action killer. And, it pisses people off. Of course, check-raising
is allowed in TD and it's something to be reckoned with. Still, though, too
much of it will ruin the friggin game. So many players are more interested
in trapping someone than making money.
There is a time and place to checkraise in TD. In the case we're talking
about, his checking to the guy behind him who had drawn one, (and still a
draw to go), was a gamble. I'm not saying it was wrong, I'm just saying
that a lead is smarter in this case and more in line with the "lowball
spirit". (of course, as we know, he only check-called with the smooth 8 and
we know that was crazy so I won't beat a dead horse)
A lot of newbie/converts from high poker to lowball, make the mistake of
checking monsters into pat hands or previous raisers on the final round. In
high, you would certainly check for a check-raise if the guy behind you is
pat. You EXPECT the guy behind you to bet. But in low, you can't EXPECT
the guy not to just show down when it's to him. You make a good hand, just
take the lead away and FIRE into him. If he still raises, then you can make
a play by laying it down and muttering something about how you had bet a
pair.

Jordan brings up a great point about how to think about the game when
he mentions limping and drawing one. But, I don't hate it as much as
he does.
The rest of the hand is bad. I would bet out, but the fact that you
checked and he bet out is perfect. Raise it up. And definitely bet
on the end.
I have a feeling you would have played very different with 76542, but a
perfect 8 is only one hand down the rankings. Bet it like a 7. In
general, I'm not missing bets with any 86, and only check/call with
87, maybe a 9 if the opponent is fucking crazy.

first round? I'll tellya what. There ain't nuthing that will kill a good
lowball game faster than tight asses who do this kinda shit. Same is true
for TD as was true for single draw. You can have a good game where everyone
is happy and gambling up, and then someone with this philosophy fucks it up.
Look, if you're gonna play lowball, bring it in with a raise if you've got a
decent hand. Otherwise, just get the fuck out of here or stay home.
