FYI, set your TIVOs!  I just saw that the Cincinnati Kid will be aired on Turner
Classic Movies on the 12th at 10:15 AM (mountain time).  That's channel 256 on
DirecTV.

For those who haven't seen it, it is probably the greatest poker movie ever
made.

The Cincinnati Kid isn't about poker, and it's not a poker movie. It uses
poker as an excuse, the vehicle as might be said, to get the 'established
authority' against the 'young upstart challenger.' As that, it's a great
movie with wonderful characters and settings. Same as the 'The Color of
Money' isn't really about pool. These movies have the advantage of
built-in aficianados willing to watch because they've got the thing they
enjoy featured in the movie. A real movie 'about poker' would be a
documentary, imo.

I rate it right up there with that ESPN mini series TILT. Unrealistic,
predictable, and boring.

I agree with the poster who said the only good poker movie would be a
documentary.

I think that One of a kind had all the right material, but was poorly
done. This is just what I have read since I have not seen it.

Tx. It has been a while since I saw this. In the final hand was McQueen
cold decked or did they go for the "Impossible Hand" finale?

Speaking of which, what is the reaction to the Bond ilm poker sequence?
Talk about the "Impossible Hand."

I can't comment on the Bond one since I'm not a fan of the series, but in
Cincinnati Kid, it was just a cheesy, over-the-top ending.  For a poker movie to
be good, it has to end in a ridiculous and improbable hand.

I am a fan of Bond, and I liked the new movie, this Bond could really kick
somebody's arse.  Of course I knew what hand he had as soon as I saw the board,
but I still liked the movie.

There was a lot of moaning here about the unrealistic poker in the movie
and I am thinking to myself.... No problem with all the other unrealistic
stuff Bond movies are known for, but they expect the poker should not be
rigged. Go figure. It is a fantasy movie.

One of my favs of all time too. Edward G to Steve Mcqueen after an all
nighter where he basically takes his lung with a SF. "You're good kid.....
but as long as I'm around, you'll always be second best".

I do like the Maverick film with Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster. A
lighthearted film but I find it fun to watch.

I also bought the Rounders special edition DVD. However, in my opinion, no
one has ever made a really great poker movie. However, there's a new one
that is supposed to come out in 2007. I think the name is "Lucky You" or
something like that. Stars Eric Bana and Drew Barrymore. Matt Savage said
it is the only movie that "gets the poker part right". I live in hope.

Suggestion: take your hopes and put them in the same jar you would when
you're 10:1 ahead on the turn on Pokerstars. I was really hoping this
would be good...then the previews appeared. When seeing one preview, one
time, is enough to make you gag - it moves into the "rent if it's cheap"
category.

Reason to worry #1: Drew Barrymore. If mute isn't active, trouble ahead.
Reason to worry #2: Drew Barrymore's character - who is too dumb to know
that reading your boyfriends cards out loud while he's playing may be a
bad idea.

The girlfriend in Rounders is annoying...but at least she isn't in any of
the actual poker scenes.

Thanks. I haven't watched it in over 25 years. I locked in to recorded

recollections of Robinson and McQueen.

Channel 40 on Cox Cable in Vegas 9:15pm.

In my book, the best movie that revolves around one hand of poker has to be "Big
Hand for a Little Lady"

That is the right way to run a bluff. Of course it is a movie about a con and
not poker, but...

Plus, Joanne Woodward was smoking hot back then.
