They're trying to tell me that the only "replacement
cost" coverage they have requires you to replace everything
and then hope they will reimburse you for it..

When my basement flooded we went through the items and assigned a purchase
value, current value and replacement value. the approval was based on the
replacement value and I was approved to claim up to that amount on the "similar"
contents. You couldn't replace a TV with a couch but you could replace a desk
with shelves with book shelves and a desk.
I take it you were in some sort of damage and if you can I would take all the
pictures of the stuff you can. Make a full list every little thing, even toilet
paper and cleaning supplies. It will take some doing but it is worth it. Have
them put it all in an approved replacement list and then all you have to do is
submit receipts when you replace the stuff. I was given 6 months but asked for a
year and they agreed.
