Subject: Question for the Christians----The real reasons I started that thread

I've had quite enough of the idiotic, spiteful, and/or pointless threads
started lately. EstebanAA was actually less annoying when he was getting
to final tables and begging people to come watch him play. Igotskillz is
especially disgusting. Isn't he the retard that says atheists will all go
to hell? And if that's not enough, he prays that we will die soon. Is
this the same fuck-head that got screwed over by one Philippina woman, and
then started numerous threads on how all Philippinos are scum? I think
there is one more offender I may have forgotten. To quote Al Pacino in
"Scent of a Woman", "Fuck you, too."

I thought I'd give a bit of your own medicine to you. Not only was it the
same medicine, the medicine maker was one of your own. My post yesterday
was a re-wording (a re-gifting if you will) of Irish Mike's 'Question for
Atheists' on March 31, 2006. So to those of you who had negative comments
about it, they were really directed to Irish Mike.

In all seriousness why bother? I've been made to feel uncomfortable by
theologians. In public, at the mall, at bus stops, in the military, and
even at home by proselytizers. So I've retaliated by making them feel
uncomfortable, and insulting their intelligence. When the right occasion
comes up I've even taken a shot here and there on RGP. At least I've come
to the realization that most of you atheists, and theologians have yet to.
1) Atheists won't be swayed one bit by what some dumbfuck, never been
able to think for himself theologian has to say about god. And 2)
Theologians won't be swayed one bit by what some going to hell, heathenish
non-believer piece of shit emissary sent to test your faith atheist has to
say about atheism.

But of course statements 1, and 2 aren't completely true. On occasion the
one becomes the other. And maybe that's why you will all continue wasting
each others time. I beseech the idiots who are starting these threads to
knock it off. I realize we can all talk about what we damn well feel
like, but on this subject we all waste each others time. But maybe we
like to waste each others time like this. So I will give one final
rational to influence you to stop. The ugly side of you often comes out
when you discuss this.

I sincerely hope you all become like me now. Indifferent about what the
people you disagree think. Now here is Irish Mikes post, and mine after
it. Happy Holidays. No fuck that. Merry Christmas.

This is not a rant and I'd appreciate a serious answer. One thing I've
never understood about christians is why they spend so much time and
energy
railing against people who have come to different conclusions about the
origins of their life and of the universe. If you're a forty year old
christian it means you've already used up more than half of your life
(Give or take an infinity in heaven or hell.). I'd think you'd be out
chasing wine, women and song, or at least be doing something productive,
instead of wasting your few remaining years trying to convince adults that
their thought processes are not as well developed as yours is.

We atheists don't believe there is a life for us beyond this life and your
moronic notion that we should believe as you do only serves as a waste of
your time.

If I was a christian I'd devote my remaining days to going to Mass, saying
a Rosary, reading the bible, enjoying myself and dreaming of winning the
lottery and banging Shana Hiatt.
I sure as hell wouldn't waste even a minute of it trying to convince
others about something I
don't believe in and that can never be proved in this lifetime.

I refuse to seriously discuss religion and politics with people for this
very reason. People hold their thoughts on these matters in so high
regard that there is no point is discussing it because there will never be
any headway made. People either find someone who feels the same way they
do and feel vindicated, or find someone who feels differently and feel
victimized. Lose-lose situation. The disapointing thing is that in most
cases, all of these "firmly held beliefs" were formed when the individual
was a child, more the product of their families belief system then their
own.

I remember reading of recent research that these type of beliefs are hard wired
into the more primative part of our brain during puberty. The evolutionary logic
for this was the need to be able to store information that would be essential
for our survival. However, as group networks evolved beyond survival, the brain
stored our beliefs and language capabilities as they become essential for t
ribal identification and cooperative survival tactics.

Hence, the subjects of politics and religion (social bonding keystones) have now
become part of that hard wired brain and it takes quite a substantial emotional
or physical trauma to change our outlook. Unfortunately, this doesn't fare too
well for the  'free' exchance of ideas.

To paraphrase a favorite quote, the mind should be like a parachute; it only
works well when it's open.

The point in discussing religion is to exchange ideas, to understand
each other. It shouldnt be about trying to convert each other or trying
to change the others opinions. Its not unlike the poker discussions. An
animal type player tells us to bet bet bet. The rocks of this place say
to fold fold fold. They wont change each other, but the discussions are
still interesting.

What continues to baffle me is how fruitless it is to discuss politics and
religion. Nobody is going to change their position, yet time and effort
continues to be applied in hundreds of posts as if somebody somewhere may
wake up and say "Oh yeah, I've been wrong all my life!"

Very true.  One of my favorite quotes:
"The definition of a fanatic is someone who can't change his mind, and won't
change the subject."
