Depending upon where you are from, you might want to check out a site
where someone offers a free bankroll.
This allows you to get started without having to risk any of your own
money. Usually they offer $50-$100 free that you need to play with at
a certain site a certain number of hands before you can cash out, but
when you complete the hand requirement its yours to do with as you
like. Of course the people offering the deals hope you will keep the
$$ there and keep playing at their site, but the choice is yours.

Depending upon where you are from, they offer free bankrolls at up to
three sites, and most importantly they are a reputable company, unlike
some others that really aren't. Take a look at their forums, they are
full of satisfied customers.
The most important thing to remember is to try to find a site that
allows you to play to your bankroll. Titan offers true micro-limit
games with .01/.02 NL and PL Hold'Em. If you are making a small
deposit, such as $20, you will need to focus on this type of site. If
you plan on depositing more, you can look just about anywhere.
Some sites aren't clear on their splash pages about what limits they
offer. You can download and install only to discover that the lowest
game they offer is .25/.50 and this can be very upsetting if you only
have a $20 bankroll.
As far as games, most all sites offer NL HE and Limit HE as well as
Stud and Omaha, but if you are looking for a particular game such as
2-7 triple draw or Razz, you need to look at the individual sites to
make sure the game you want to play is actually offered from the site
you are going to sign up at. From what I've read and seen, these two
games, and a few others, can be hard to find.
Party and PokerStars, at least in the past, were the top two sites.
You could find a good variety of games going 24/7 at all levels. Some
of the smaller sites are still somewhat empty especially in the off
hours. So consider this if you will only be playing at odd hours of the
day. Sites with a European and American presence tend to go pretty
much 24/7, but some that target a specific demographic, such as the
Scandinavian countries tend to be empty at peak times for other card
rooms.
Also if you live in the US, some sites do not offer their services to
you any more. You may need to look at the laws passed to see if online
poker is still legal where you live. In pretty much the rest of the
world, other than China you won't find many restrictions on where you
can and cannot play.
