Subject: OT: need help from anybody in the San Fernando Valley

Hi all.

I've recently taken a new job (a very very good job) in Agoura Hills.
Unfortunately, I live in Murrieta, which is about 120 miles away (as the
crow flies) which can be anywhere from 2 to 4 hours in L.A. traffic.
Needless to say, I am not commuting on a daily basis. I come up here on
Monday during the day sometime (leaving my house around 9 works well) and
then go home Thursday night, and work at home on Friday. So far, I've
been staying in the Good Nite Inn off of Las Virgenes road, but this place
is probably the worst motel I've EVER stayed in. It is costing me
$70/night, which is still more than I want to spend, considering I have to
do this three nights/week.

I am looking for recommendations on 1) better places to stay, or 2) if
anybody has a room/back house for rent, I'd like to hear about it.

TIA,

Alan

When I went through my divorce in 1988, I used one of those roommate
finder services. It worked out great.

I used to live in Calabasas, where the Good Night Now! Inn is located.
It's always had the smallest rooms of any hotel I've ever seen.

When my family used to visit, they tried the Good Night Inn once and
eventually ended up settling at the Radisson on Agoura Road off of Reyes
Adobe (on the south side of the 101). They used to get rates of about
$80-85 a night.

It was a pretty nice place, but I'm pretty sure it's no longer a Radisson.
I think it might be a Renaissance now, so I'm not sure if that would have
caused the rates to change much.

I don't remember there being any good budget hotels in the area. Once you
get past Tarzana or Canoga Park or so, the area is pretty upscale until
you get out to the sticks.

Yeah, it's terrible. Also, there seems to be a bunch of people who do
crack deals/smoke crack there.

Yeah, I think they are around $200/night now, so 12 nights/month is
WAAAAAY too much.

Yeah, that's the problem. I don't want to go too far from the office, but
there really is nowhere to stay around here, not even a Days Inn.

Heya Brewmaster -

Delurking for a miniute.

Take a look at the Hilton Garden Inn or the Country Inn and Suites,
both in Calabasas right down the road from where you are working. I
think you can get rooms in either for $100 a night or less - and I'm
sure you can negotiate a better rate. Both are decent enough although
the Hilton is newer and more geared towards the business traveller.

Hope that helps.

I live near San Diego & work in LA, so I do something similar every week.
I use Priceline and get a NICE room, 3* or 4* every week for less than $70 a
night.

How long will you be needing a place to stay? Try negotiating with a better
place like a Courtyard or Holiday Inn Express.

May also want to try hotwire. Although if there isn't much in the area
you may not have luck either hotwire or priceline.

You can also try and get a lower rate at a nicer place. If you tell
them you are going to be staying the 3 nights a week for x amount of
time you can probalby get 1/3 the normal rate.

Isn't there a Best Western or something at Sepulveda Blvd. just north of
Nordhoff?

That's going like 20 miles though...I mean, I'd like to stay as close to
the office as possible (office is between Chesebro and Kanan).

I'd rent a single bedroom apartment for $600-$800 a month rather than relying on
crack-ass motels for half of the month. Ask around for safer neighborhoods, like
Reseda; not war-zones like North Hills.

Interstate routes are your friends, even if they only go 11 miles an hour.

Try bidding $50 on Priceline for that area. On those days of the week, I
imagine it will be accepted and they'll put you up in a nice place.

That is a really good idea Paul. Seriously, I don't know why I didn't
think of that. I'll let you know how that works out.
