"Yes; we may all congratulate ourselves that this cruel war is nearing
its close. It has cost a vast amount of treasure and blood. The best
blood of the flower of American youth has been freely offered upon our
country's altar that the Nation might live. It has been, indeed a
trying hour for the Republic; but I see in the future a crisis
approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of
my country.

"As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned and an era of
corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the
country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the
prejudices of the people until wealth is aggregated in a few hands and
the Republic is destroyed.
I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than
ever before, even in the midst of the war."

True... history does play little tricks on us.

Should have allowed the south to secede. What right did our forefathers
have to force them to stay? I believe the world would have been fine with
a USA and a CSA in existence.

It was simply the 2nd American revolution. This one happened to be crushed
through tremendous bloodshed.

Only that isn't the way it happened. The CSA foreclosed debate by seizing
all US property in lands it claimed and firing on a US military
installation. In the context of the politics of that time, the rest was
automatic. The thing that amazes me is that they did this in response to a
mostly-symbolic reversal (Lincoln's election) at a time when they were
generally winning politically.

I thought this rhetoric (the second parargraph actually) sounded a little
too prescient for 1865.

How on earth would I possibly know what I would have thought of
anything had I been born over a century earlier?

Your question is inane.

(And I'm not making any "comparison." I'm simply sharing a stunningly
prescient thought from Lincoln)

Sorry, youre right, you meant no comparisons with current events. I forgot you
were in the habit of posting "prescient statements" from historical figures.

While your perusing history for some more "prescient statements", check
Washington's farewell address to the nation and his warnings about partisan
politics. Thats a subject you are very familiar with.

MAYBE I would have. The answer is unknowable.

Again--you're being inane.

Again, you're being assinine.

You just don't know shit about history, so you don't know what the fuck to
say to jd00123 without sounding even more stupid than we all actually know
you are anyway. Your only knowledge of anything is what you currently read,
which, of course, is totally left-biased. If I am not right on the mark,
then go ahead and attempt to answer jd00123's question. Bitch!

It's an easy question: I would have supported the south. They had every
right to secede and form their own country. Whether people in the north
agreed with their ideology, and whether anybody agrees with it now, is a
moot point. They had a right to their own beliefs, and to set up a
country based on those beliefs. The civil war only exposed the fact that
we not "United" states anymore, but enslaved states.

Since you brought up the comparison, had you lived in the north in the
early1860's, would you have been one of the copperheads calling for Lincolns
head for involving the country in a unpopular war?
