Subject: OT: Earthlink shuts down news servers

Apparently Earthlink has shut down their news servers and doesn't plan
to offer usenet access in the future. I haven't been able to download
any message headers dated after December 8.

I thought I might be having problems with Outlook Express, so I
downloaded Forte Agent. Same thing. Nothing after December 8.

Tonight I called Earthlink technical support and was informed that they
have shut down their news servers and have no plans to offer usenet
access in the future.

Can anyone who has been using the Earthlink news servers verify that
they have encountered the same problem?

Amazing that a major ISP would just discontinue usenet support. I
guess they found that only a small percentage of their customers were
using the news servers and decided to save some money.

I am also paying $40/month for Embarq (formerly Sprint) DSL service
using Earthlink as the ISP. This is a 5 mbps down, 640 kbps up
service.

Unless someone can offer a better alternative for usenet access, I will
probably go with APN, Agent Premium Newsgroups, offered by Forte, which
also offers the Agent newsreader for $29.

Their FAQ says you can use the service with any newsreader, so you
don't have to buy Agent. Their basic plan offers 7 gigabytes/month for
$2.95/month or unlimited service for $14.75/month. You can subscribe
here --

Yes Barbara, that is what I am using to post to this thread. Google
Groups is better than recpoker, but not as good as a newsreader.

I have to have a newsreader so I can have a killfile. Otherwise,
idiots like pokerchimp, susan, and wuz/luv would drive me nuts with
their psychotic threadstalking and harassment.

If you don't need broadband hookup with flex.com... Full service,
except live tech support, for 9.95 a month... Been using them for quite
some time now and they are rock solid...

I'm on Earthlink DSL. I've had the same problem. If they stop offering
newsgroups then why should I keep paying $40.00 a month when I can get the
same speed for $12 the first year and $20.00 -$29.00 after that? I'm
already going thru Ameritech/SBC/AT&T lines anyway.

I have not heard that Earthlink was closing down access to Usenet tho.
All I have read is that they are working on it.

AOL discontinued their news service a long time ago. I use Google and
it works fine.

A few years ago I was having major problems with Road Runner's news
servers. Their support staff had 2 items in their call chart database
thing, both having to do with authentication and set up. Anything after
that they were told they didn't support. Their news servers had a 0%
completion rate for binaries for several months straight. When I finally
got to one of their "network techs" he told me it was the first he'd ever
heard of the problem. Apparently I was the only Road Runner customer
using their news servers. Great.

I've tried several pay usenet providers, giganews.com, usenetserver.com,
and I'm now using easynews.com. I use recgroups for RGP though because I
can hit it from a web browser.

Eyebrows slightly raised here. In the UK, the norm (such that there is one)
is that one would routinely expect one's ISP to provide a Usenet feed, as
well for that matter as SMTP and POP servers as a matter of course. The
impression I get is that is arrangements tend to be somewhat different on
your side of the pond.

Just an observation,

They offer usenet feeds, they just don't know anything about them. They
get so few calls on them that there is no training for any of their
customer service staff on them. I mean, if you think about it, people who
use usenet are generally tech savvy enough to figure out how to use them
on their own...they typically just need the server name.

For me, the only reason I had to call was because their servers were
either down, or missing so many messages that they were useless. I
finally just gave up and went to a pay provider.

I imagine the ISP's have bean counters that look at usage and cost, and if
they see very little usage on something like a usenet feed but fairly high
cost for both bandwidth and storage, they make a financial decision to axe
it.

I use a news provider in Germany. Less bullshit and harassment,
no IP address dangling in the breeze, and no point in anyone harassing
my ISP with bullshit if they don't like what I have to say.

http://news.individual.net

It's €10 a year, which is pretty cheap, but doesn't carry binaries.
You have to register for a sort of European PayPal thing to pay in
Euros. Otherwise, there's no hassle.
