Subject: OT Having a problem with OE Newreader and pushing enter too soon

I recently added some newsgroups to my OE. Now when I click I get this
message:

(Triangle with ! in it) An unknown response was received in response to a
request for information from the news server 'new-server.se.rr.com

The I click on details, and it says

502 Permission Denied - Connection Denied - Please see
http://help.rr.com/HMSLogic/newsgroups_help_topic.aspx?topic=Newsgroups
(Tornado v1.0.6.371)

Configuration:
Account: news-server.se.rr.com
Server: news-server.se.rr.com
Protocol: NNTP
Port: 119
Secure(SSL): 0
Error Number: 502
Code: 800ccca0

This comes up whenever i click on any newsgroup. It's been going on for a
few days. I don't recall doing anything to effect it.

Any geeks out there?

That's the problem.
I hope you'd know that pushing to enter too soon makes getting
connected more difficult -- some time should be allowed to get the port
wide-open.

Shouldn't that be 'newS-server.se.rr.com'

Road Runner just changed news servers. They've knocked retention time to
NINE months, whereas before it was less than two weeks. Now my problem is
that OE just cannot handle that many messages. Right now I have 155,476
messages for this group alone.

What does it mean "they've knocked retention time to 9 months etc...what
does that mean?

It means that unopened message headers can have their text displayed for up
to nine months. Before, if you had an unopened header that was on your OE
for two weeks, you would be told by OE that the message was not on the
server. Now that they have updated their hardware and software, they will
send you valid headers that are at least nine months old.

Yeah, but don't you limit the number of headers it downloads? What am I
missing, here?

On a similar subject, either I or my news server is seriously messed up...
It divides threads into many different mini-threads, so I will get, like,
this topic with 2 replies, then further up is an RE:OT Having a problem...
with a few more replies.

It's very frustrating. I have glanced at some of the options... but I
have also tried switching to Thunderbird, and it did exactly the same
thing...

Any ideas?

Try it for yourself. OE is limited on that option to 1000 headers max. If
I did that for this group I would miss many messages unless I constantly
checked this group for messages.
