Golf and booze I used to play a lot of golf (about 120 times a year) from ages 26 to 37. Over the last few years a few things have slowed me down: marriage, time constraints at work, drinking less. Mostly, I taught myself the yips with my chipping. The lowest index I had was a 2 but I never really played like one thinks a 2 would play. I basically hit 5 or 6 greens, made a few birdies, got up and down from every trash can, putted well and shot 77 on a tough course (Ancil Hoffman in Carmichael, slope 129) which if you often enough it comes out to a 3 or so. Every so often I would hit the ball well and shot 72 or 73 which brought it a bit lower. Anyway, I cannot chip anymore which really puts a damper on my enjoyment of the game so I really only play so I can hang out with my friends on a Wednesday afternoon. Beats working. I still, occasionally, shoot 77 but only after I have been drinking. For some reason, the demons do not creep into my head and I play like I used to which brings me to the other day. My buddy picks me up at 7 am for an 8 am tee time on a Saturday. Since I am not driving and do not have anything else going on, drinking ensues. I am playing terribly given it is tough for a 39 year old to drink enough in the morning to get a head buzz. After twelve holes, I am 14 over and pretty boozey. I then par 12, birdie 13, 14, 15 and 18. I had two tap ins and made two 8 footers. It was the easiest 6 holes I have ever played (I did birdie the first 4 holes one hung over morning once but shot about a million on the last 15). My question is how to play like I do when I am drunk and not have to drink 12 beers prior to teeing off. Sure I used to do it prior to marriage but I would like to avoid the negative aspects at this point in my life. Suggestions welcome. Comments that I am big pussy and should just dive back in the bottle before every round are welcome.

If you approach the sport of golf as a professional would, you can acheive your goal without using alcohol. You probably don't want to put in the time needed to overcome your chipping problem. With practice and perhaps a new technique, you could neutalize the bad effects of your short game and let the strong parts of your game carry you to a lower index/ handicap. But you would need to be sober and take time to practice and experiment. Maybe in six months you would be ready. If you are a real Sportsman, you will accept the challenge of trying to become a better athlete. If you cannot accept that challenge, you are just a weekend warrior, a wannabe jock...the links, courts, and fields are full of 'em. -lefty _______________________________________________________________ The Largest Online Poker Community - http://www.recpoker.com

I am sure that is the case. I would think once I started sucking I would not even think about score, pressure (really what pressure is there other than betting), execution etc. but I still do, apparently (I do not feel the pressure but I still blow until I am 8 beers in.) > > Sounds like you're just playing more relaxed when you're buzzed. That is amazing insight from my post. I will surely come calling for advice from you on how to handle myself in social situations once I sober up. You can't handle the truth. You're an alcholic, in serious shape, and you function better at most life activities when you're drunk at a maintance level. You'd probably flunk a cop roadside drunk test after 2 beers but pass it after 8. On Nov 29 2006 6:10 PM, William Brandon wrote: > I am sure that is the case. Plus, you won't smell like a brewery when you get home. :) _______________________________________________________________ New Feature: Mark All As Read! - http://www.recpoker.com

I was the same way when I played on a 9-ball (pool) league in my mid-20s. I was far better after a pitcher of beer than I was sober, likely because I was more relexed and didn't over-think my shots. But my increase in play quality followed a curve, peaking when I was a bit buzzed, but quickly declining as I approached drunk. Always made me think of the classic "WKRP In Cincinnati" episode in which a highway patrolman uses a machine to test Johnny Fever's reaction time before and after shots of whiskey, as an on-the-air demonstration of how drinking impairs your reflexes and makes driving dangerous. But the more hammered Fever got the faster his response times on the machine. Funny episode....though not on a par with the Thanksgiving turkey air-drop. "With God as my witness....I thought turkeys could fly." That one still puts me on the floor.

When you're not drinking do you feel pressure to make every shot?

This keeps the stroke consistent and also makes you hit down on the ball which encourages it to check on the second bounce. I play really well when I'm drunk too, I posted my best score (gross 76, net 63) one morning after two hours sleep and two Absolut shots for breakfast. However I can't play after smoking weed, I can't face having to pick up and carry my bag for the next 200yds :) I don't play nearly as much as I'd like but I'm a comfortable hcp 8.5. Of course, YMMV.
