Subject: Not dead-placed in a live tourney-Tourney rpt.

So, I haven't played online since they passed that bill. Not sure why not,
just a vague sense of unease.

Went out to CA for their Friday tournament. $40+20 (Yeah, I know, huge
juice), T1500 starting. I paid for the tournament and got an extra 1000 in
chips by playing 4-8 live for a few hours beforehand, so it's basically a
freeroll. Friday after T-giving, so 218 players, only FT pays (10 players
per table)

First hand, AA. Last time I had AA in the first couple hands, I doubled up
on the third hand and was out before the blinds. Blinds 25-50, I raise to
175, one caller in the BB. Flop comes 9 high rags, one diamond on board. I
bet the pot, he calls. Turn pairs the board, and another diamond. He bets
out the pot. I've played with him live, and I know he loves to semi-bluff
bet draws, so I put him all in, and he almost beats me into the pot. Crap.
Then he turns over J5 of diamonds, no diamond on the river, I double up,
HGHN.

Do moderately well over the next 5 rounds, no spectacular hands, but
enough steady ones to get me to ~ T12000 at the first break. Playing well,
avoiding speculative crap, and getting good info on my table. I'm at one
of the tables that is usually a final, so I know that they won't break the
table until way late if they do at all. A couple good players, but a lot
of people willing to "gamb0000l it up!". They go broke and leave in a
steady stream.

Next rounds after the break don't go so well, I get absolutely no hands,
and my one big hand, two pair, gets whomped by a flopped set. Down to
about T6000 at the second break. Play resumes, and I've got an M of about
4, so I'm looking for about any good spot. I get AK two off the blinds,
push in, get one caller who turns over AQ. w00t! Flop comes rags (w00t!)
turn Q (Crap!) river K (w00t!), and I double up. BB two hands later, 3
players limp in, I check with 89d, flop comes 67T rainbow, up against AT
and 45, I triple up to about 36000.

Suckout of the tournament. Good, solid player to my right raises to T10000
UTG with blinds at 1500-3000, no ante. Young, loose player at the other
end goes all in for about 20,000 more with pocket 3's. Player to my right
has him way covered, and calls with AJ clubs. Flop comes A 9 3, solid
player gets up and puts on his coat. He's starting to walk away when the
turn comes J, river comes A. Most of the players start shouting, and the
3-6 table that has started on the table that broke behind us gets a couple
players that come over saying "Did you hit the jackpot!??" Schmucks.

I get to the final table with about T65000, and put out a small stack on
the first hand with 99 vs. ATd, get to about T77,000. We go around for a
few orbits, couple other small stacks go out and we are left with 7
players. Minor discussion about a chop giving each of us just over $1000,
but the chip leader and one other don't want to talk about it yet.

My death hand. I get TT UTG with blinds at 3000-6000, I've got ~ T62000. I
raise to T20,000, comes around to the BB who goes all in raising me 22000
more. T71000 in the pot, and I only need to call 22000, easy call. He
turns over AK. Blank flop and turn, then WHAM! K on the river. Not dead
yet, but definitely a blow. Get crap in the blinds, and raised out of them
both times, and I'm next to shortest stack with ~T11000.

I screw around for a few more hands, and could have outlasted another
stack that was just a little less than mine, but I misread the tourney
payout. 7th got $583, 6th got $693, but I read it as $633, and I didn't
feel like hanging by my nails for another $50, so I went all in UTG with
A9, got called by 88 and IGHN.

But, I played strong poker for most of the tournament, felt really good
about the way I played, and cashed. That makes cashes in 2 of the last 3
tournaments I've played at Casino Az.

I'm on vacation again next week, so I'll probably play either the Thursday
or Friday tourney, possibly both.

Why the laugh? I don't need to play online, I have 8 casinos within 20
minutes and vegas 4 hours away. I'm getting a teaching degree, the last
thing I need is for some freak thing to happen and I'm busted for
"illegal" gambling.
