Very nice. You have 4 hours to sleep, then must post details.

Ok, a few memories. First: I played strictly conservative Roy West stud
pretty much beginning to end. I stuck to my usual practice of looking at
the up cards for liveness of my hand, suits not to worry about a flush in
and whether there were enough big or little ones to discount the chance of
a straight on one end. Otherwise I forgot about them as soon as they were
gone. This MAY have cost me a pot or two, but it kept the mental effort
manageable.

Right out of the gate, as soon as the stakes got somewhat noticeable I got
crippled when my one opponent made the long straight from 5 to 10 against
my two pair. But not too long after that I tripled up back to health making
aces up against the same guy (with another fishy draw) and a stack even
shorter than mine (with big cards). Unfortunately, the guy with the big
stack took this personally and I had to forget about ante steals going
through him. Even more unfortunately, he's as good a stud player as I've
encountered, and it would have been nice to stay below his radar. Next
notable hand was making something like 5-s full of aces (the aces up would
have been enough) against another big stack for a score that put me in the
table lead until a guy moved over with a HUGE stack. Through all this I was
staying out of trouble with conservative hand selection (basically, I just
wasn't in the hand when people made monster winners). Just before dinner
break I went to war against the huge stack and he damn near busted me by
making a flush (and a straight too) against my two pair (notice any pattern
to my hands?)

After that, I was mostly just hanging on. It was kinda fun when we were at
two tables and I was around middle-size stack with a huge pile two to my
right and another huge one directly to my left. I took only the fattest
chances and built back up to a biggish stack while most of the mountains got
worn down. I came very close to being bubble boy when another straight got
made against my starting big pair, but I didn't overextend. Arrived at the
final 8 in 5th. Reached [effectively] 3rd a little after midnight mortally
wounding the mid-tournament chip leader with (if I remember right) a big
pair against a small one. That hand showed that I was losing mental
control, though: I somehow thought we were all-in on 6th street and turned
my cards up, earning a 10-minute penalty (remember the guy who crippled me
the first time? HE insisted even though the other players and the dealer
were inclined to give me a pass). Penalty may not have been such a bad
thing, since there were a couple of freakish hands while I was sitting out.
I sas small stack, but not by such a huge margin as these things go
(something like 1 : 1.5 : 2) when I got back in, but my mind was going and
it was obvious. After maybe another 20 min, I went to war against the #2
stack holding like [AJ]9. He had like [TT]7 and that's all she wrote.

The whole tournament I only made one or two significant draw-outs (one of
them against a tiny stack, so people watched as my unpaired big cards caught
companions), and suffered 4 straights or flushes made head-up against me,
two of them crippling. So sure it took a lot of luck, but I feel as if I
had as much to do with it as the cards did. And it was neat being there at
the end, a $10/20 player against two guys who play high limits.
