Hitting Vegas this time of year is a first for my wife and myself. We usually wait til after the Christmes / New Years holiday but our son decided to get married in December so off we went. The wedding was actually quite nice. Not the cheesy LV wedding we had imagined. I didn't have all that much time for poker. We arrived late Sunday night and the wedding took up all of Monday. On Tuesday morning I headed downstairs for the Alladin 10:00 AM tourney. A $60 buy in with unlimited rebuys for the first hour. Only one person at my table did the rebuy. An older gentleman who saw every single flop and chased any flush and straight draw to the river. He wasn't hitting anything but continued to play this style until he got KO'd chasing yet another 4 flush (with his potential 10- high flush draw !). I commented that a player like that could be trouble when he's hitting hands and the dealer told me the guy wins the tournament from time to time. He had finished in the money the day before. They start you with 2K in chips and blinds at 25 - 50. I guess my only surprise was that , except for the loose older guy, the play was actually pretty decent. I got a hold of most of my chips by trapping with a flopped set of 9's. I called a preflop raise from MP and the button and Bigblind called. The flop was K-9-5. Everyone checked to the button and he bet. The blind called, the EP guy called and I went all in. I got called by the buttons' A-K and the EP called all-in. The turn and river helped no one. I made it to the final table ( there were about 50 players to start) as the short stack. The top 6 players got paid. There were 3 other players with stacks just a little larger than mine. I went all-in 3 times and didn;t get called once. Everyone had tightened up to try to make the money. The woman to my right basically waited until she got blinded off. She told me she couldn't wait to tell her friends that she made a final table. She got to tell them shortly afterwards when she out in 10th. I continued to steal with mediocre cards and no callers by targeting the smallish stacks. Evertually, I had enough chips to assure myself a payday. We lost 2 more players shortly therafter and I was in the money. I ended up going out in 5th for a payout of $232 when the chip leader called my all-in bet from the BB. I had A-10 and he had K-8. I hit an ace on the flop but he made a gut shot straight on the river with his 8. Looking back, I did OK finishing where I did given my cards. The largest pair I caught in 3 hours were nines, but my A-K , A-Q hands held up when I needed them to. That should have been an omen for the 4-8 cash game I was about to join at the Bellagio. More on that later...... jo
