Subject: LV trip report Part II

After finishing 5th at the Alladin $60 no-limit tourney and pocketing
$232, I was feeling pretty good. After all, I hadn't seen a high pair
during the entire tournament.
I headed over to the Bellagio to play some $4-8 limit hold em. The
5 Diamond Tourney was underway with a $1500 satellite being played.
Forty Four players out of the 400+ players would get a $15,000 + $600
buy in to the main event. Lots of pro's here, as expected.
I had to wait about 30 minutes or so for a seat to open up on the
$4-8.
What a table ! This is supposed to be the type of table everyone
loves.
One maniac, several inexperienced players who would call to river with
bottom pair or any draw , and one rock.
The first hand I played , I was dealt 3-3. It was raised by the
maniac,
2 players called, I called from the cut-off and the button called. The
flop came
K-8-3 with 2 hearts. I hit my set, but the hearts could be trouble. The
maniac
bet, 2 called, I raised and everyone called. The turn brought a
harmless 6
of spades. It was checked to me. I bet. The button called, the maniac
folded
and one other player called. The river brought the dreaded heart. It
was checked
to me, I checked and the button bet. I made a crying call and sure
enough, he
showed the 9-2 of hearts for the flush.
He told me he was mixing up his play. Good excuse. At least he
didn't consider
himself a good player. The player on my right did, though. He said
"You know,
I've watched the pro's play on TV and I don't see how they're that much
better than
me" This coming from a guy who played any 2 to the river regardless of
the action.
He then asked "Seriously, what makes the pro's better than me ?" I was
too stunned
to respond, but the player to my left says" They know pot odds". The
player on my
right nooded in agreement.
WTF is it about poker that some people think they can play well with
little experience ?
Some would answer ego and maybe they're right.
Anyway, most of the pots at this game were over $70 , but you had to
get lucky to
win one with all the loose play. My KK got burned when the gut-shot
card came on the
river for one chasing dumbass and my flopped straight lost to a
runner-runner flush on
another hand. I got almost even on my final hand when my aces actually
held up.
I know that this type of table can be lucrative, but I sure seem to
get hosed with a table
full of loose calling stations. I realize pair values go down and
suited connectors increase
in value but my own results haven't been great playing a little tighter
than the rest of the nuts
and raising when I'm ahead. I suppose you have to expect bigger swings
and that solid play
will eventually win out.
One thing I came to appreciate is how much more I enjoy live play vs
on-line. I can ID
the players styles easier and quicker, plus I have a much easier time
focusing on the game
than I do on-line. Maybe I should try shutting off the TV and not surf
the web while I'm playing
on line.

That's one reason I switched to NLHE. Limit is a calling game. After the turn
brought a blank I wonder if the guy would call off his entire stack hoping for
the heart? Cause I woulda min raised the flop and stacked him on the turn.

Yeah, it's probably not a mistake if you were to never fold a 4 flush on
the flop in these games. Whine all you like, but aside from playing the
92s in the first place, he really didn't play his hand that poorly.

true... something to consider next time you get 63s in the CO and everybody has
called to you.

4-8 is not low limit.  It is recreational poker.
