Intro to Cash Games

I intend to have mini-lessons throughout the next 2 months. There will
be more than 1 per week. You must digest the information and think
about the game. I apologize for 'missing' the last lessons of the year,
but I hope 'ASK RUSS' made up for it. I am still having time-management
issues and spend too much time in the Forum.

While many of you play for fun and hope to win, many just play to make
money. In reality, cash games are the best way to make money. Cash game
players are the best of the players and don't need to rely on one lucky
hand to make or break their career.

Many players would be in different situations if one hand had gone
differently for them in a tournament. People remember the winners, not
those who came in second.

Yes, you see all these tournament winners all over the magazines, but
believe me, it won't be in the too distant future when much of this is
gone. Cash game poker will always be with us, but tournaments will
reach a breaking point.

No Limit poker is a fad, which will fade before long. It's only been
played a short time, less than four years actually in cash games. Prior
to the poker boom there wasn't a steady No Limit Hold'em game in the
world that I know of, that ran everyday as the game does now in many
places.

There is not enough skill required in the game and far too much luck.
For the next couple of weeks I'll be going through options for cash
players, for those who would rather make money on a steady basis.

Many of you are new players and don't understand the many
transformations poker goes through all the time in order for the house
and new blood to be brought into the mix. Every decade or so, another
game comes into play to boggle the minds of those not capable of
understanding one game strategy from another.

Decades ago the games were very dull, but the edges were very great. It
is far easier to make money when you play in games that have greater
edges than in games with minuscule ones.

No Limit poker is actually a very skillful, but boring game when played
properly. Even in today's world, the best cash players have a great
edge over the weaker ones. The one fact people fail to realize is this
will be changing soon - some people will lose 'enough' and eventually
quit and others will get far better and the game will become boring.

One of the best cash games to learn is Stud 8. It's a game that baby
boomers and many women like to play. It's a very complex Limit game,
though most people don't realize it.

You should not consider online play as your means of winning at poker
if you aspire to becoming a professional. Young players should use this
as a means to get to the places that have the B&Ms and play there. This
means, getting a bankroll together and moving if you think you possess
the skill to win. AND ABOVE ALL, cash players of today should learn all
games.

The difference between cash and tournament players is not just the
'skill factor' - mental abilities on a number of levels are essential.
Cash players don't have the swings and produce income an average of
three out of four plays.

Beginning cash players should keep records of their hours in games
along with wins and losses. This Big Bet theory is all some ridiculous
formula dreamed up to stupefy the unknowing. The earning you make from
games is done by dollars made per hour. It always has been, it always
will be. If you average $18.00 an hour playing $20-$40 limit, are you
going to state I make 9-20ths of a Big Bet?

Many of you don't have access to B&M casinos, but believe me they are
far superior to online games and far easier to beat in lower levels.

I will start explaining the pros and cons of each and you make you
decision. I really haven't much idea of the average age of members of
this site. I would guess many are in their twenties and aspire to be
professionals.

Let me warn you now, as soon as you become a true professional, you'll
lose most if not all the fun you have playing the game. The reason,
it's now your job.

Russ, I totally agree with this. It's a drag. But do you have tips on how not to
make it boring? I am talking especially about omaha8 ring games and heads up
SNGs. How can you motivate yourself so that it won't be too much of a chore?
