Easy. Looking for a price, I ignored the favorite in the 1973 Belmont
Stakes. I was on the nose of a forgettable also ran.
In a five horse field, Secretariat won by 31 lengths and the Exacta paid
something like $33. So for $8 I could have wheeled the biggest lock in
history and made 3-1 on the money. Not a bad place for the entire bankroll.
The reason for this price was the second choice, Sham, was pulled up and
finished last.
But a lifetime honor to witness the greatest race of them all.

Well, Titan was only a couple years. Mostly it was Party. I never
spammed, and I 'won' thousands of dollars. Of course, that bet still

Oh, I should also say that I left a poker hand in this because I don't
gamble or make bets outside of poker. I was never the "wanna bet?" kind
of person.

I have many examples for this one. Here's one I remember pretty well.
My 2nd and what was the last time at our poor excuse for a casino (you
know football field sized bingo hall, 37 zillion slot machines, blackjack,
craps, roulette, and a little itty bitty room with 10 poker tables crammed
into each other. They only had limit games or a 1-5 spread limit stud
game. I go in fully expecting to lose a buyin, because I hate limit, but
hey, I'm at a casino, so I have to play. I put my name on lists for 2-4
and 5-10, and get called for 5-10.
The play is horrid. I'm losing IQ points with each hand. That's my only
excuse for this one. 2 MP limpers, button limps, SB folds, I check the BB
with 52o. The Flop is 523 rainbow. I bet, MP guys fold, button raises,
and I 3 bet to see what he does, since A4 is a likely holding (not to
mention the highly medicated crazy guy hand). He looks openly disgusted,
and throws his chip into the middle.
Turn is a 3. I now turn into a complete moron. I bet. He raises his
eyebrows and calls. Whatever, I have, ummm, I can beat, ummm, fuck it, I
had 2 pair! River is an A. I now can beat KQ, and that's it. So I bet.
He raises, and proudly flips over AA before I can even call.
Wheee.
Ask TNL about the one hand on GamesGrid at 1/2 NL. That was amusing.

Dumbest bet I ever made. I am thinking of stopping this post but what the
hell....
I was taking golf lessons from a local PGA pro I met at a party. Knew his
trade well which made me go pay the money and see what he could do for my
putting which at the time, was just atrocious.
He took my putter and compared it with some others and asked me to try one
of them. I picked them up...hit a few putts and said I didn't like
them..they are too light compared to mine. The pro said that's just in
your mind..these are actually heavier than yours. I smiled and said dude,
I know this putter better than any other club I own. It's heavier than
that one.
"Insert a small pause which I now know is the action of a shark smelling
blood"
He said...without looking at me...
"Care to put some money on it?"
Ahhh...youth...
I was dismayed to read in the paper a few months later that he got busted
for selling drugs. Guy definately knew his stuff.

On my way to Hong Kong for R&R in 1969, I was in Saigon when a Vietnamese
offered to buy my camera for 10 times what I paid for it. Since this was
considered black marketing I had to do it under cover and we went into an
alley to make the exchange. The guy counted out the agreed upon amount in
MPC (military payment certificates) and neatly rolled it up, but a rubber
band around it, and handed it to me. I gave him the camera and me and my
buddy hauled ass out to the street and got into a taxi. I unrolled the
money and there was about $6 worth of Vietnamese money on the inside.
I told the taxi driver to stop and told my buddy I BET we could find the
guy because he had on a baseball cap. We got out of the taxi to find a
sea of look alike Vietnamese wearing baseball caps.

K-9 off in the big blind 2 limpers no reads as I just moved from a
busted table in a no limit MTT about 1/3 of the field gone, low buy in
50.00.
Flop hits K high rainbow. I forget how much was in the pot, but I bet
about the pot. 1 folder 1 caller. Turn is a low card which matches
the spade on the board. 2 spades, I bet the pot again which was either
too low or too high I cant decide which, but at this point I pretty
much pot committed myself with this bet. Other dude calls River hits
another spade which hit my 9 so now I have 2 pair on a suited board.
Now even though I have no real reads I know the other guy hit his
flush, but I bet all in anyway he turns over the j high spade flush.
Out of tourney with nothing to show for it.

This one is so dumb I'm embarrassed to admit it. I was having a business
lunch with a peer who was a notorious tight wad and cheapskate. He was one
of those guy's whose wallet never left his pocket. I mean when this guy got
a dollar the U.S. Treasury Department just crossed off the serial number
because they knew it was never going to be circulated. However, I was new
at the company and didn't know how bad he was. Well after lunch the
waitress brought our checks and he immediately goes into his "I left my
wallet at home" routine. So I said I'd get the check. Here's the beauty
part. He pulls out a coin and says, "I'll flip you for who pays next time".
Without thinking, and wanting to appear a good sport, I said OK. He flips
his coin, I guess heads and lose. Then it finally dawns on me that since I
just paid for that lunch, he should have volunteered to get the next one.
Plus, the other guys eventually tipped me off that the bastard carried a
coin with two tails - because the majority of people apparently guess heads
in a coin toss situation. Basically, I let myself get suckered twice for
the same lunch tab!

Guy I worked with for 3-4 years was a huge San Diego Chargers fan. We
live/work in KC and I'm a huge Chiefs fan. Anyway, last year I bet him 20
bucks that KC would sweep the Chargers..... Best part was though, he gave
me double or nothin on the game in Arrowhead... .dumb ass. No one beats
us in arrowhead. Except Cinci.

A guy i used to work with has a standing bet $100 that the Leafs will take the
cup. Only condition is the bet has to be made before the drop of the puck for
the first game of the season. I bet him that once. His contract was canceled
before the end of regular season and I never did get the money.
Damn contractors.

Before the 2005 season, I made a bet with an abrasive guy in my golf
league that the Packers would beat Baltimore on Monday night. Straight
up. That was the WORST $50 I ever spent cuz I hate that guy.

That reminds me. I used to work with a good friend who is a Bears fan.
He and another cow-orker had a bet every week. Something like $10 per
game, for both the Bears and Packers games. If both won or both lost, it
was a wash, but if one team one and the other lost, it was $20 to the
winner.
That was the 95-96 season.
