I don't normally get involved in forwarding these kinds of messages. However, in the spirit of helping some one during the holidays, and maybe even saving a life, I'm posting this (brief) advice: "STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Letters... S.T.R. My friend sent this to me and encouraged me to post it and spread the word. I agree. If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks. Please read: STROKE IDENTIFICATION: During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital. At 6:00 pm , Ingrid passed away. She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this... A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough. RECOGNIZING A STROKE Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps, "S" "T" "R". Read and learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S * Ask the individual to SMILE. T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently - i.e. "It is sunny out today") R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved - maybe yours. [Apologies in advance to any one this message may have offended] Irish Mike

Did this god-like neurologist also explain why it's not enough to just diagnose within 3 hours? Why does he require both recognition and diagnosis. He must be a Republican. He could probably win in Iraq if the liberal press would just recognize all the good things about the war. My father had a stroke in the middle of the night one night, then went back to sleep. Neither he nor my mother knew anything was wrong until he got up in the morning and fell when trying to walk. He recovered some function in his right side after months of therapy, but never had a full recovery. If he had recognized the possibility that he might have just had a stroke, he might have worken my mother up and gotten to a hospital in time to be helped. - Bob T. > > Irish Mike

Nice post Mikey I took care of a Korean war vet once. He had been a friend and he had a few strokes. After lots of therapy, he returned to normal. Thanks for the post, you reminded me of one of my few true friends. Come to think of it, most of my true friends were Koreans and Korean vets. Thanks for the very simple yet useful info. A doctor friend of mine told me mini strokes happen all the time without people knowing it. Another important skill worth learning for almost anyone is CPR. If people knew your stroke info and also knew CPR I'm sure a lot of problems could be avoided. http://stuungar.blogspot.com On Nov 27 2006 10:22 AM, Irish Mike wrote: > I don't normally get involved in forwarding these kinds of messages. > However, in the spirit of helping some one during the holidays, and maybe > even saving a life, I'm posting this (brief) advice: > > "STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Letters... See if you have anything in your warehouse about what to do for a painful erection. I used to get them all the time about 45 years ago. :) On Nov 27 2006 1:38 PM, Kinnipak wrote: > On Nov 27 2006 12:22 PM, Irish Mike wrote: > > > I don't normally get involved in forwarding these kinds of messages. > > However, in the spirit of helping some one during the holidays, and maybe > > even saving a life, I'm posting this (brief) advice: > > > > *snip* > > There is also an excellent article somewhere(I'm in my warehouse now, > can't look for it) that states how you can help yourself if suffering a > heart attack by coughing very strongly. great info, thanks so much for sharing. considering some of your more un shall we say peppery posts i've enjoyed i did find it amusing you asked for forgiveness for any offense this one might cause. : ) I don't think this one would offend a Carmelite nun. some of the nasty/irreverant responses below lead me to wonder if on this board could there ever be a posting that stayed sweet and true and did not generate one catty/nasty/irreverent/just plain vulgar response? Or is nothing sacred?
