Play in a small and friendly .50/.50 pot limit hold em home game. For the most part I try to play a tight conservative player. I was a consistent winner for a long time but have fallen on hard times the last 2-3 months. One hand last night has me wondering if I am just playing to weak and allowing the table to run over me. I was UTG and straddled. UTG +1 limped, a MP player limped and the button raised to $5. I looked down at AQs-spades. I decided only to call and see the flop. The UTG +1 folded and the MP player called. The flop was K-10-3, one spade. I checked, the MP player checked and the button bet $15. I folded and the MP player called. The turn was a J, which would have given me broadway. But more importantly, the remaining two players checked it down and the MP player won the hand with pocket 4s. I did not see the button's cards. Please help me identify all the places I went wrong. TIA. Lasych

Everyone buys into the game for $100.00. At this point in the evening the button had tripled up when his pocket fives turned into quads against another players full house. I and the other two players in the hand were hovering around the $100.00 level. The MP player is very loose and will call with many hands. The button is very tight and, while he will take a stab at the pot from time to time, he will only call large bets with very strong hands. You need to get 10 to 1 on your money to chase that gutter, unless you think your A would be good too. That would give you about 7 outs......close to a flush draw. Would you call a flush draw in that situation? If you would, then you should have played it. You have to be right that your A would be good, because you'll lose a boat load to trips/two pair, etc. You need some assurances that you are going to get paid off if you hit, and with a pair of 4s.....that pot would have been over when you hit your hand and bet too much for them to call on the turn. I want to add another good reason to fold: MP may be planning to check-raise the flop with a big hand. Now you've thrown away your $15 for nothing, unless you plan to call a $60 re-raise with Ace High. - Bob T.

Yes, you would have won this particular hand had you stayed in for the turn, although it is doubtful you would have made any extra money from it. You didn't have odds to draw unless you knew an ace or queen would win it for you, and there's no rational reason to expect that. The button is representing AK very strongly. Since you found out that he was full of it (he couldn't beat a pair of 4's?), pay attention to the way he played the hand and see if you can pick him off later.
