"LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Weeks after News Corp. scrapped plans for a book and TV interview in which O.J. Simpson described how he would have killed his ex-wife and her friend, the publisher behind the projects, Judith Regan, has been fired, media reports said on Friday. Word of Regan's dismissal from News Corp.-owned publishing house HarperCollins came in a terse press release headlined "Judith Regan Terminated," according to online accounts published by the New York Times and Daily Variety. The statement said her termination was effective immediately, both outlets reported. No explanation was given, and The New York Times said it was unclear if she was fired only from HarperCollins or from all News Corp. units. News Corp and HarperCollins representatives were not immediately available for comment. But the move followed ill-fated plans unveiled last month for a book, titled "If I Did It," and accompanying television interview featuring Simpson giving a hypothetical account of how he would have carried out the 1994 murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman. The book had been set for release by Regan's imprint at HarperCollins, ReganBooks, on November 30, following a two-part interview of Simpson by Regan on News Corp.'s Fox network. But the publishing and TV venture drew a firestorm of criticism accusing News Corp. of seeking to capitalize on a human tragedy. Days after plans for the book and TV special were revealed, News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch personally weighed in to announce both projects were being scrapped. Murdoch said then that the book and TV deal were "ill-considered" and he apologized for any harm caused." Up until her firing, Judith Regan was a major force in the publishing business, so much so, that HarerCollins created "Regan Books" to give her a publishing outlet of her own. My guess, however, is that the OJ Simpson book was known to all the upper echelon at HarperCollins, and that her firing -- at least in part -- was an attempt by others to contain the damage and keep the shit from washing all over their shoes too. In my opinion, dumping Judith Regan was a surgical procedure to keep the disease from spreading. The fact that no one is talking publicly about her termination is a good indication that News Corp and HarperCollins both want this to dry up and blow away as quickly as possible.

I think it's a fair assumption that the OJ book was known to upper management at HC. The surprising part to me is that the public and the media actually reacted so strongly against the project. With all the tasteless bullshit on television and in American entertainment, if I was Regan or in upper management at HC, I would not have seen any reason why the OJ project would not have been a ratings monster. Yet, it apparently crossed some line such that even the American public found it disgusting and in poor taste. That's saying something right there. One of my college professors was fond of saying that we could use the best available data---and he would then write on the chalkboard in large capital letters a B for Best, A for available, and D for data, and say---and still make a BAD decision.

"Up until her firing, Judith Regan was a major force in the publishing business" True, and I agree that upper management probably knew exactly what she was doing. However, from what I've read she was also a tyrant with a long list of enemies. I also thought her contrived explanation of how she wasn't doing the O.J. project for the money but to help abused women was pretty damn lame. In any case, I'm glad she, and the project, got canned.
