I was headed to Louisiana this morning to get a powerball ticket and this
came on. It made me want to find a club named after a highway and get
drunk. Lot's of songs are good to sing along with after you get drunk,
but there are a few that fling a craving on you. This gets my #1 vote.

What is on the radio now?

Coe can make me grab for a brew. A lot of Pogues tunes are practically
designed for drinking to.

Good song. However, if you like DAC then you will probably be called a
racist.

I have always thought that having a Black in is band, in an industry
where the _stage_ is always one of the last places to be integrated,
spoke volumes for DAC's not being a racist, per se. He _is_ a person
who could easily be perceived, accurately perhaps, as an asshole. He
would rip your head off for very little and he probably _could_ but it
wouldn't matter much what color you were.

He writes songs that come from his violent and unpleasant past and the
violent and unpleasant world of many of his fans.

I don't think he meant you were a racist, just that you were leaving
yourself open to being accused of being one.

It's not his music but his following and personal history that fuel
that accusation. In prison, he was evidently part of a white gang. I
don't think he had much of a choice but whatever.

DAC has written some great songs but, oddly enough, the one he is best
known for is the one you posted and he didn't write it.

From Wikipedia:

"Coe recorded two albums in 1978 and 1982 containing racist and
misogynistic lyrics of extreme vulgarity and racial crudity: "Nothing
Sacred" and "Underground Album." Also available is a best of the X-rated
albums compilation entitled "18 X-Rated Hits". Coe has defended the songs
(such as one deriding an adulterous wife who leaves her white husband and
children for a black man as a "Nigger Fucker") as bawdy fun which never
made him much money as well as pointing out that his drummer at the time
was black. This has also led to confusion regarding offensive works by
other artists, especially Johnny Rebel, whose songs are often mistakenly
attributed to Coe. [2][3]"

I'm not sure about the "mistakenly" for Johnny Rebel though. Am I the
only one here who knows Johnny Rebel? I'm not even a southerner...

See my other post. A lot of people think DAC was Johnny Rebel, and he has
a large catalog of racist songs of his own.

I torrented a 2008 concert of DAC a few months back...he's still great.
He did a great version of Dave Loggins' Please Come to Boston.

I am not aware of why since the only songs I have heard of him have had no
racial overtones, but then I haven't followed everything he has done.

I like Charley Pride too, does that offset my liking DAC?

DAC has a huge catalog of very racist stuff. It is also widely speculated
that he was Johnny Rebel (or at least was heavily involved with Johnny
Rebel).

You know I didn't want to go hang with the guy, just throw down a couple
six packs of Schlitz and yell 'YOU DON'T HAVE TO CALL ME DARLIN, DARLIN'
and 'SHE GOT RUNNED OVER BY A DAMNED OLD TRAIN'

I guess I will just have to go back to Jr.

'I SAID HEY SAW BONES I'M JUST CARRYING ON AN OLD FAMILY TRADITION'

Heck, I didn't even know DAC had been in prison.

I knew a guy that had been in prison, had one arm. After he got out he
was at a concert in Ruston La and this guy tried to get tough with him.
He just looked down at the ground and back up at the dude and said 'I've
fucked guys tougher than you in prison' That was that.

Jr? I much prefer Sr. (assuming we're talking about Hank Williams). I
could sure toss back a few to Jambalaya.

Sorry I'm really into music and for some reason I like to take every
opportunity to dump a bunch of music trivia from my brain. You live in
the south somewhere, don't you? Ever heard Johnny Rebel? Racist through
and through (and unapologetic) but good music.

Nobody can compare to Hank Sr but I have to say I liked Johnny Horton's
songs more as a kid. Whispering pines, Bismark, Battle of New Orleans,
long black veil.

Hank and Johnny were married to the same woman. My wife used to wait on
her at the bank in Shreveport La.

The thing about Hank that was missing with so many early country artists
was that Hank could write a song and the rest of them just sang the same
stuff that someone else wrote.

I really love music but my range is very narrow. Not that I don't like
new stuff, but when I find something I like I tend to listen to it all the
time and I have listened to very little new stuff in the last 20 years.
Jonny Lang is about as new as it gets with me.

Van Morrison and John Prine are my favorite singers/ song writers. Blues
and Country and whatever you call Prines music.

Talking to you about music is like me talking college football with Trout,
I can't really hang.

Neil. It used to tear my heart out to listen to that song on my way home
from my girls house with stinky on my pinky,

You know, when you are 15 - 18 and get fucked up over a girl you get some
weird emotions.

Tim Wilson says if you want to stop school shootings then don't let girls
break up with boys until school is out for the summer.

That's a great performance of what may well be the perfect country
song. But this, which is more rock than country, is a close second, at
worst.

Have you ever tried cheese grits? I have to say I like the regular ones
better.

How about boiled okra? Turnip or collard greens? Barbecue Raccoon?

Stump slung chitterlings?

We were so poor when I was a kid that I thought you had to beat every beef
product with one of those aluminum hammers before you cooked it. Mother
would buy round steak and tenderize it for an hour it seemed with that
hammer. I was grown and married with kids before I ever had anything like
a rib eye.

I walked to school bare footed in the snow, backward, both ways.

Can you figure out whether Mike is drunk or crazy? He seems to think
that _I_ posted that Roger Miller song, when I was the one who felt
bad for Susan when she posted it.

Anyway, early death is glamorized in rock but it is very common in the
history of country. As is substance abuse and all the marital problems
possible to the human race. Then there's George Jones.

I thought the same exact thing. Not only that, but I felt he thought the
Roger Miller song was the focus of the thread.

I think Mike must not read these things in order, he can't be that stupid

I think you two old ladies need to get a life. It's a corny shit-kicker
song - I didn't like it when it came out and I don't like it now. I don't
give a shit who posted it first - my comment was about the song. If that
got your knickers in a twist, it's your problem.

That really is a good drinking and singing along song. When you mentioned
doing it better than your homeboy Hank, I thought about Charley Pride
doing Kaw Liga.

I was browsing Country music legends the other day and was surprised at
the early deaths of Hank, Johnny Horton, and Patsy Cline.

Oh dear God. This piece of shit song was terrible when Miller wrote it and
it hasn't improved with age over the last 40 years. Hell bucko, if all you
want is an American drinking song, tie a bandanna around your head and
listen to some early Bruce Springsteen.

Roger Miller was really good in his time and I loved king of the road as a
kid, but it doesn't make me want to drink and sing along.

My #2 would be Family Tradition by Hank Williams Jr.

I struck out more times to HEY JUDE than any other song in history . Our
high school always ended all of our dances with it .

then one night while it was playing I met the girl who "deflowered" me
while this song was playing .

i am a big fan of hey jude !!
