Just for fun I tried several of "Freeroll" multi-table NLHE tournaments this week. What I noticed was very strange (on _ONLY_ one of the two sites I have been using). I am hoping someone could enlighten me. As an online player since 2003 I can usually figure out most things about sports betting and poker that seem odd at first. But frankly this one has me baffled. WHY DO SO MANY PLAYERS REMAIN FOR EXTENDED PERIODS IN "SITOUT" STATUS? Last night the blinds had increased many times over the course of the 1 1/2 hours - yet there were still 4-5 players "stuck" in sitout status. So basically the game was 5 handed which is no fun! I went back and checked another freeroll tournament today and witnessed the same thing. Your thoughts please. MT P.S. Perhaps the innocent explanation is that they are simply collecting hand histories free of charge as there is no entry fee for a freeroll. Hopefully they are not using this info to program a poker bot <wry smile >.

So > basically the game was 5 handed which is no fun! > > I went back and checked another freeroll tournament today and witnessed the > same thing. They don't sit out for extended periods, its simple: they signed up for the tournament and they aren't playing it. On most sites you have to sign up for the freeroll tournaments 45-60 minutes before they start. So you will get people who will sign up and then go do something and not come back (they go out, watch tv, go to sleep, go for dinner, etc) Others will just sign up, start the tournament and push all in for the first 4 or 5 hands. If they still have chips they just sit out then and wait to see where they end up. For your overall comments I presume you are talking about PokerStars. What you saw isn't really some strange fluke occurence: in most of the freerolls probably 10-20% of the participants are sitting out and have no intention of playing. The sites know about this, but there isn't much they can do because they don't know who is and who isn't going to come back. But what they have been doing of late is moving the the time registration opens closer to the start of the tournament... at Pokerstars most of the NLHE freerolls during the day open about 30 minutes before they start. That might not sound "short" but in the past it used to be 2 or more hours when you could register before the tourney started. At FullTilt they have some freerolls that open for registration in as little as 10 minutes before they start. For your particular predicament the only viable options are going to be: Not play in the freerolls Play them and realise there isn't anything you can do about it Work on your short handed poker game

WTF are you complaining about? They are blinding off their stacks to the active players. Nothing juicier than having two or three players to your immediate left sitting out. William Coleman (ramashiva) I totally agree. Most sites don't let freeroll players sit out for more than 2 rounds without acting at least ONCE on their hand prior to sitting out in the later rounds. If they acted on a hand, and then sat out, WHO CARES?! Let them blind off. The only difference between them sitting out, and folding every hand is that it's faster, and if they're on your LEFT, you know that if no one raises ahead of you and you're on the button you have a great chance to steal their blinds. -- Rick "ADB DaVoice" Charles

50% of the online gamblers use cheat software to pull them out of the bogg especially the free rolls that wins them satellite seat in big money buyins!! They usually play three or four sites at a time and cant concentrate on multiple games at once!! Soo instead of loosing their starting chips they wait till the game get close to blinding them out this cuts down on the excessive time paying concentration!! Then they jump in there and win either enough money at sit and gos using cheat software to make their quota for the day!! They will most likely be one of the 50% that cheats at online poker just to get a satellite seat POCKET ACES and POKERRNG are a couple<I;-)

But some of us do not like to play 5-6 handed games - which is the net effect when 4-5 players are sitting out. For a variety of reasons I want the table to have 9-10 players - especially at the beginning of the tournament.

If they have been sitting out from the start and never sat back in, it is likely they forgot they signed up and aren't even there (especially in a freeroll).
