Well, it's finally over. I've enjoyed the competition and would like to
thank all those who took the time to turn up and play. Never thought that
I would end up winning my own first prize and I feel a little embarrassed
about that, but what can you do? Second prize goes to Meesy - well done

I'd like to try and get something similar going for next year but I think
the format needs a bit of a rework. 12 full months is just a little bit
too long with hindsight and I would imagine a slightly later start time
might be more popular. We'll see!

Incidentally, I think that the formula could be tweaked as well. Maybe do
it on a logarithmic scale rather than linear. That way you are better
rewarded for finishing deep (as I believe Spazzo won the year-long deepest
finish prize)

Something like:
Points = 10 * [sqrt(n)/sqrt(k)] * [1+log(b+0.25)]
Where:
n is the number of entrants
k is the place of finish (k=1 for the first-place finisher, and so on)
b is the buy-in amount in dollars (excluding administrative fee).

I guess. I didn't really run any numbers in there but I'd also assume
that it would be the same tourney so you can skip the second part of the
equation.
But yea, something that rewards a top 10 finish much much more than a top
100 finish (as it should be).

I thought you'd recognize the formula - it's lifted straight from Stars'
site and is the one they use for calculating TLB points.
TBH, I'm not sure how to award points in such a way that deep finishes are
suitably rewarded without risking a player with one good finish running
away with an unassailable lead.

I didn,t because the TLB formula only gives points when you cash. Your
formula always gives points.

I don't think it would do that at all. If you look at JBK's finish of
14th (I think), out of 4000, he'd get, in my imaginary system, maybe 1.4
times the number of points for that tournament than the next highest
finish (Meesy? 35th?). In your system, JBK got what, maybe 99.5 points
compared to 99?
It does not have to be a system that would totally reward in a top heavy
manner (1st is 100 times more points than 100th), but should be some sort
of logarithmic scale.
The one I just came up with out of my ass is Points = log(# entrants /
place of finish) x100 Seems to work decently.

Is it simply a game of odds? Looking at the results posted, it appears that,
generally, the more games you played, the better chance of doing well and
rising to the top of the list. Perhaps all games should be included, not
just top five. Or perhaps just games in which you cashed. I don't know.
