What are you guys using?

I'm replacing my Dell and at looking at Dell, Toshiba, or HP. They
have a Toshiba with a 17" screen for $599. AMD X2 RM-72 dual core
with 4GB memory and 250GB disk. Delll is $799, HP is $699

Any experiences with Toshiba? HP? My other Dells have worked fine.

Not with their PCs, but my wife, who is from Japan, says that Toshiba
has a very good reputation for making solid, reliable products.
Apparently, their strength is not in innovating, but in refining the
innovations of others.

I'm using a Dell Latitude E6500 that I bought a few months
ago. My critera for selection were:

- Had to be available with XP
- 1920x1200 display on a 15" screen
- Fast enough to run Photoshop well

I have no complaints at all about the machine.

I have had almost the same Tosh (3GB, RM-70) for several months now
and am very happy with it. The display and keyboard are great. My
only regret is that it doesn't have a digital video output
(DVI/HDMI), that should have been on my shopping list.

My old Dell laptop was also reliable after an infant death
replacement, but I won't buy Dell's anymore because some of their
preloaded crapware is intentionally made difficult to remove (eg "My
Way" doesn't show up in Add/Remove Programs).

i just got a HP one month ago with that exact configuration...17" 4gb
250gb same chip for.....$479 (after $110 in rebates) at Office Depot.
its working beautifully. i was really surprised what a big selection of
laptops they have. i dont go gaga over Fry's anymore. they dont seem to
have the really good deals like they used to.

Ordered a Dell Studio 17 with the same config weeks ago and it just
arrived. Cost me $1k, oh ya it's going back!

I've had a bunch of laptops and would rate Dell as very good. The
questionable thing about Dell is their support. I've had some truly
horrendous experiences trying to get problems fixed with their dot-head
support team. I finally paid a couple of hundred bucks to buy their
"deluxe support package". Translation - technicians who speak English as
their first language and it was worth every penny. I think most of the
major brand laptops today are pretty good and there isn't a great deal of
difference in features. Of all the laptops I've had over the years, the
only one I'd classify as "a total piece of shit being serviced by morons who
didn't give a shit" was a Gateway. Fortunately, my company paid for that
piece of shit and I was able to switch it out for an IBM ThinkPad.

I have a very cheap "promotional" Toshiba that I have for two years- I
use it for some work on the road and poker on the road - works great for
both. In fact used it at the airport during a 6 hour delay using their
wifi and portal to play. Made the delay go fast.

The only problem I have had with the Toshiba is a battery charging issue
due to a bad connector. Paid $80 to have it fixed.

I don't think the poker sites are very graphic or memory intensive- so
anything you pick up today will be fine for poker. If on the other hand
you are using it for more intense applications than you might want to
look at higher end.

I love Toshiba's and I have had an AMD chip in most of my systems. I don't

currently. I like them for the cost benefit.
