Just read on CP that PS is going to do an $11 tournament with 35,000
people. Top 8,750 get paid. Sick.

10 minute levels, but this is still going to have to take a looooooong
time. Bet there are at least 1,000 all-ins first hand.

---

PokerStars has shocked the poker community many times over this past
year with some incredible tournament fields and some impressive prize
pools, most notably with its $11 buy-in events. Last Sunday, its
Sunday Two Hundred Grand tournament featured 25,000 entrants, with
$25,000 going to the overall winner. Not bad for an $11 investment.

But on Sunday, Dec. 28, at 3:30 p.m. ET, the site plans on out-doing
itself in record fashion.

PokerStars will offer a $500,000 guarantee for an $11 tournament. It
is touting that it will be the biggest cash tournament of all time in
terms of field size =97 an argument that no one can sensibly argue with
=97 and the site has contacted the good people at Guinness so that the
achievement makes the Guinness Book of World Records.

The site has capped the number of entrants it will accept for this
tournament at 35,000, so even if it reaches maximum capacity, it will
still add $150,000 to the prize pool to make the guarantee.

As of Dec. 17, more than a week and a half before the event, nearly
4,000 players have already registered. Although they are calling it an
=93attempt=94 at the world record, it seems difficult to imagine the
tournament will not approach its capacity based on the site=92s previous
success and all of the added money.

The tournament will have 10-minute levels, with 10 players per table.
Each player will start out with 3,000 in chips. The overall winner is
expected to get $30,000, while the top 8,750 players will make the
money.

The event can be found under the =93Special=94 tab of the =93Tourney=94
section at

The Sunday 100K started with a 10,000 max and has made it to 25,000 max.
I don't watch every week since I'm at the bar watching the Raiders, but it
always maxed out prior to football season. I see no reason why they can't
get 35,000 since there is a $150K overlay.

Interesting. How did you calculate that both players would have
exactly half the chips in play, when the final hand starts?

I want in on this bet! Why dont we do some sort of pool, where
everyone picks a time, no one's allowed to pick within 3 minutes (or
something like that), and closest wins? Any interest?

I would like some of that action, but my problem is that if we do not have
enough money on it most people will not want me involved because I cannot
just transfer money on stars because I do not have money on there.

I have to pay my debts the old fashion way. Sending a check.

So this thing is going to last about 30 hours right? Will they give a
break (in terms of a day break etc) if it last much longer than say 18
hours?

No it won't. I'd be surprised if it lasted much more than 16 hours.

Indeed. The length of time for a tournament is not a linear function of
the number of players.

I think they'll be down to the final table in ~12 hours. Assuming the
numbers stay at 35000.

I think if they doubled that number to about 70000, they'd be down to
the final table in ~13 hours.

At that point, it really just depends. And this is all assuming they
don't have any hardware glitches forcing them to freeze play, or take
some extended break after x hours, or whatever.

Cheers.

*I* think that'd be pretty fair/accurate, but I'm also not interested in
wagering on something like this, so wait and see what Fell thinks. I'm
sure y'all can reach something you both think works.

I pulled 30 hours out of my ass obviously, but your line make a little
sense.

You asked me to make a line.

I doubt I could come up with one that makes sense for both of us.

Give me a little bit to think on it.

We may have another bet in our future here.

Alright, John, here is the proposal:

If the tournament (Guinness World Record attempt on Dec 28th at 15:30 EST)
lasts more than 10 hours 30 minutes (including breaks), you win. If the
tournament lasts less than that, I win.

If you agree, suggest a bet size.

Freerolls are 15 minute levels. This is 10 minute levels. That really

On most of the Poker Stars tournaments, the pay out is stretched so far that
you've got to finish in the top three or four spots to make any real money.
And when you start with a field of 8,000+ players it's a crap shoot at best.
You can invest five or six hours in one of these tournaments, out last 7,500
players and still win next to nothing. The most I ever won in an online
tournament was $30K and that was on Party Poker. They had a field of 1,655
and I came in second. The most I ever won in a Poker Stars tournament was
$2,900 and I out lasted more than 7,150 players. I'm not saying you can't
win some serious tournament money on Poker Stars, I'm just saying you've got
to get damned lucky to do it.
