I was just listening to a podcast on Rounders Radio which featured an interview via telephone with Annette Obrestad, (aka "Annette_15"), who is destroying the online poker world. Due to her age, Annette's first shot at the WSOP won't come until 2010, but it was clear that she is chomping at the bit for her shot at glory. I rolled this around in my head a little bit and came up with a scenario that will have the folks at ESPN salivating - and a couple of well known [male] pros sweating. Just imagine a final table with Annette and ... Phil Hellmuth Jr. Of course it will be virtually impossible for the ever humble Phil not to remind Annette that he is "the best poker player in the world" while she sizes him up like a boa constrictor about to put the squeeze on a cayman. It will surely be the greatest spectacle in WSOP history watching Phil go nuts when Annette busts him. As if this weren't enough, think of the sight that will greet us if Annette actually manages to win the whole ball of wax: Will "Amarillo Slim" actually carry through with his long-ago "promise" to slit his own throat if a girl wins the Main Event? (There's actually a picture of Slim standing behind Kathy Liebert holding a large kitchen knife to his throat and laughing with glee in Jim McManus's celebrated book "Positively Fifth Street".) Will Annette be the lady who turns "Slim" into the modern day equivalent of Bobby Riggs? The Hollywood people couldn't come up with a better script than this. I only hope it comes true! :-)))) Alan C. Lawhon Huntsville, Alabama

Lawhon > Huntsville, Alabama Did you actually read the book? I can only assume not, since the story was that Slim said he would let some lady named Vera Richmond cut his throat with a dull knife if she won the WSOP main event in 1973 (she had the chip lead halfway through the tournament and was bragging that she was going to win, she didn't even make the final table). Slim was just playing along with the exaggerated story that he said he'd cut his own throat if any woman ever won the main event. Michael U.S. American

I take your $50 bet as I believe it is a virtual lead pipe cinch that both Phil (and Annette) will cash in the 2010 WSOP Main Event, so that makes it a certainty that [at least] one of them will cash. (Didn't Phil cash in the Main Event in this year's WSOP?) Regardless, if you're actually serious about this bet, you better start setting aside money [now] for the payouts when you have to pay up. I posted this as another one of my futile attempts at humor, (especially the part about Annette busting Phil on the final table), but this "Annette phenomonen" raises a serious question: Namely, just how good Annette really is? Is she the female equivalent of Stu Ungar - less the drugs and "other problems" - or is she another in poker's long line of players who show early promise only to burn out and fade away like a flash in the pan? Despite her incredinble record to this point, Morph's "doubting Thomas" attitude is not unique. I have communicated (privately) with several luminaries in the poker industry concerning Annette and more specifically Annette's chances of being the first woman to win the Main Event. My feeling is that what we are witnessing with Annette Obrestad is an incredible talent and the female equivalent of Tiger Woods. However, some of the more prominent and astute folks I have communicated with have their doubts ... they have seen this kind of thing before. These individuals (who I will not name) have pointed out to me that winning the Main Event is not easy and that Annette will have to dodge a minefield of bad beats, outrageous suckouts, and clever traps in order to prevail. In short, Annette's incredible reading skills, as demonstrated to date, may not be enough. The general consensus is that while she is exceptionally talented, that does not automatically equate to her being a WSOP Main Event champion. Since the people who have expressed these views [to me] have a track record of accomplishment in the poker industry, I have to concede that they may have a point. At the same time though, I can't help but think of the parallels between Ms. Obrestad and Tiger Woods. Early on in Tiger's career, right before and just after he turned pro, (and before he won his first Masters), there were quite a number of doubting Thomas's who were pooh-poohing Tiger. There is even a famous story about a number of top pros sitting in the club house dining room at Augusta (circa 1996) talking among themselves as to whether or not this "Tiger kid" was for real? In strolled none other than Jack Nicklaus who listened to the chatter and then proceeded to inform his contemporaries, "I'm telling you guys, this young man is going to break every record in the book - including my record for major victories. Mark my words, he's gonna do it!" A year later (at Augusta) Tiger began confirming Jack's prescience. There were doubters (at first) about Tiger, but how many incredible chip shots, booming drives off the tee, and clutch "under the gun" putts did it take before the doubters became believers? The doubters may be right about Annette - she may get hooked on drugs and destroy her chance of achieving true greatness. However, to this point she has shown no signs of self destructing. If anything, she just seems to be getting stronger and stronger. And, like Tiger, there seems to be no shortage of drive and determination - absolutely no "dog" - in this young lady. I suppose this is just my own personal bias, kind of like a proud father cheering his beloved daughter on, but Annette seems more like a steam locomotive barrelling down the track at full speed. My sense is that she may very well be the poker world's equivalent of Tiger Woods, but what do I know? Alan C. Lawhon Huntsville, Alabama

Did the 2009 WSOP main event get cancelled? If you're betting on Helmuth, why aren't you betting on 2009? Now if you want an interesting bet, how about Allan Cunningham, Mike Matasow and Daniel Negraneau making the money? Action Dan Harrington would also be a good bet. If we both forget we both forget. Lots can happen between now and July 2010. I do think chances are good that if both are living and both are still playing poker that they both will cash. Win is a completely different story. I give Fell the same odds as winning the ME in 2010 as i do Hellmuth. It such a crap shoot that any donkey can get lucky. Fuck Mark and JBK might even be able to cash. Chris -------- looking for a better newsgroup-reader? - www.recgroups.com

How's the flood? I checked in on my sump several times watching it fill and empty every 35 - 55 seconds for the last 72 hours. > > --- > Morphy > xaqmorphy@donkeymanifesto.com > http://www.donkeymanifesto.com > "SHUT UP IDIOT" --The Great Patholio Chris ---- RecGroups : the community-oriented newsreader : www.recgroups.com

If either of them play in an ME ever I want to hook them up with a webcam and a live feed. I could just route that directly to the blog and never have to post again! > How's the flood? We had a few big snowstorms, like 12" on the 19th, more on the 20th and 21st, and more on the 23rd. Then on Saturday it jumped up to 50F and rained, which created water everywhere. We've only ever had water problems in this house twice, Saturday, and back in 2006 when the same thing happened. The roto rooter guys came out Saturday and cleared whatever tree roots and assorted junk was clogging things, and the 3" of water that accumulated was gone within 15 mins or so, and 3-4 hours later the cement floor was dry. That covers half the basement, and the other half was a semi-office area with carpeting. We got about half of it out yesterday, bleach cleaned the floor and threw out a lot of stuff that should have probably been ditched anyway, then we just gave up shortly before Fell got there. We didn't put him to work last night, and I'm at work today so I'm not sure what the plans are for the day, but we'll get more done tonight. The only real things lost were some gig bags and hard cases for my basses. I got rid of some computer cases that were sitting around, and lost 3 poker chip cases and poker chips will have to be cleaned up before the game on the 2nd. Luckily most of the stuff we've accumulated over the years my wife managed to get into rubbermaid bins, so we just have to get those out of the room and bleach clean the floor and clean up the bottom bin in each stack, so we're good there. Maybe we can get through 2008 without anything else going wrong, lol. --- Morphy xaqmorphy@donkeymanifesto.com http://www.donkeymanifesto.com "SHUT UP IDIOT" --The Great Patholio ---- RecGroups : the community-oriented newsreader : www.recgroups.com

having gone through 6 floods in the lat 2 years i feel your pain. Remember to make sure the walls are dry. drywall and studs soak up water like you wouldn't believe. This can lead to a mold issue. The Bleach wash is good but i have heard of bleach resistant molds. Maybe getting a flood company out to spray and use a water meter on the walls might be worth it. We had the basement checked and sprayed for $50 after the last flood. The last thing I needed was a mold issue. Sump is firing like clock work still. We had a similar thing, snowed for 3 days then weather got warms and it rained for 2. The first night I slept in the basement with the dog on the floor by the pump. He is skiddish with water so i knew he would wake me up as he has before. First flood he was in a crate in the basement. 2 inches of water in the crate. He was angry when we got home. I thought I had problems with my basement, but it leaks a little here and there in one corner and that corner is always molding, but I didnt have any problems with the melting/rain this past week.
