Subject: Do TV Cash Poker Players Use their own money?

Do TV Cash Poker Players Use their own money? I was watching cash poker on TV the other night, and I noticed a few things that don't seem right. 1. The players seemed a whole lot looser than players I have watched in big cash games in casinos. 2. Table selection was horrible. All the players were well known pros :) So it seems to me that these payers must be getting paid to play (that's obvious, why else would they show their hole cards to the world?). But how much? Is any of the money on the table their own? If anyone knows, or can support a theory, I'd like to hear it. Thanks.

The players on HSP do receive an appearance fee, although nowhere near enough to cover their buy-in. Most of the players, especially in the bigger buy-in game ($500K) are backed and/or trading percentages with other players, hence the constant attempts to lower variance by running it twice and taking money out of the pot. And some of the players (Sammy, Eli, and Jamie Gold especially) are playing way too loose because they're action junkies. The other players are actually practicing good table selection, since many of these "well known pros" are terrible cash game players. However, the good players are playing loose preflop, and tight aggressive postflop, which is actually pretty sound deep stack big bet poker strategy. I haven't seen many examples of the good players putting in large portions of their stack postflop without a big hand or draw. Michael

If you're talking about High Stakes Poker, yes, it's mostly their own money. The loose play early in the hands is a function of the deep stacks and the way the show is edited. The table selection may not be as bad as you think. While the show has had some very competent NL players on it (Doyle, Barry, Tod, Chip etc.) it's also had some huge donkeys. Any cash game involving Phil Helmuth is likely a good game. If you're talking about some other show, I can't help you. Jamie Gold was a riot. Last night they re-ran the end-of-season show for whatever year they had the $500k buy-in (I hadn't seen it before) and they gave out awards -- Gold got one for missing the most value bets. It was funnier than I'm making it sound. Matusow's a lot of fun too. Jim

I heard that most of the cash is what they are paid in appearance fees. Since this is the case I suspect they are playing freeroll style. The craftier ones may be doing this to get the guys watching at home to say they can beat them and head down to the casino to play the "pro" Game selection is a none issue. If you want to be on TV and you want the sponsorship money then you play with whomever the producers sit down in front of you. I am sure Hellmuth would play a chimp on TV is they paid his appearance fee.
