200+ Left in tournament forst place pays 130K I think 9th pays around 10K Blinds are 1200/2400 300 ante I am about 32K in chips, a little welow average I am dealt 99 in the cutoff. Folds around to me I make 7200 Folds to BB who shoves. I have been debating this in im mind for the last two days. I had just been moved to thius table and it seemed that this was a shove-fest. Even the medium stacks 40-50 were pushing with AQ, AJ, 55 Is this a good call or should I have waited for a better spot? Or should I have shoved?

Easy, ultra-standard shove here. ______________________________________________________________________ looking for a better newsgroup-reader? - www.recgroups.com

At this point in a major tourney, you have to expect that late position raises are going to get re-raised a lot, it's a play. I think you have an instacall with 99 here. Fell -- Be Loud. Be Proud. BB is probably putting you on an enormous range with that bet, though you could be trapping. With As, Ks, or something you wanted some action with... that was a great bet. But with something you were willing to fold... yeah. He/she saw a spot, was willing to risk it, and forced you into a tough decision. (btw my personal view: 99 is a good hand in these circumstances, *probably* ahead, and with almost 1/4 stack in the pot already... call). A lot of people now have a very broad range that they're going to shove with against late position raisers from the blinds (and a tight range they'll call a shove with). It's their way of combating positional advantage and they use things like Nash equilibrium charts to dictate their play. .02

Even the medium stacks 40-50 were pushing with AQ, AJ, 55 >Is this a good call or should I have waited for a better spot? Or >should I have shoved? Should have shoved, assuming a full table of 9 players. If you make a normal raise and someone comes over the top you're in a miserable situation. As it was, the starting pot was 6300. You just put in 7200, leaving you with 24800 more. BB put in enough to match you and 24800 more, making a pot of 43100. You have to call 24800 more. Those are pretty good odds, and you even beat a lot of the range that does that, much of which is overcards. Only TT-AA has you crushed. You pretty much have to call there. I'd consider folding against someone I thought was aware I was basically pot-committed and who wasn't going to do that without something that wanted a call, or AK. But then I'd probably call anyway. I think you'd be better off just shoving in the first place instead of inviting cowboys to shove into you. The starting pot is big enough that winning it uncontested most of the time is better than flipping a coin a lot of the time.
